The Big Four Oh

A little over two weeks ago, I hit a major milestone.

I officially entered "middle age".

Ack!!

My actual birthday was great; it was only the fact I was turning forty which put a slight damper on things.

That, and my husband sending a mass text to friends and family reminding them that it was my fortieth birthday :)

However, he made it up for my by taking me on a shopping spree in Provo!

We also held a small celebration with the kids:

Those are a LOT of candles:

Luckily, I had some help blowing them out:

I also had assistance with eating the cake:

The day after my birthday, we were sitting in church when Mathison got a really confused look on his face. He looked at me and said quite loudly, "Mom, how old are you now?"

I tried to quiet him, but he persisted, "Didn't you just turn forty?" This was said in an even louder tone, and people were beginning to stare.

It turns out my four-year-old was just warming up.

"That's pretty old, isn't it? You're old now, Mom!" By now he was practically shouting, and I heard smothered laughter.

So much for trying to keep my age hidden from my neighbors and ward members!

Shall We Dance?

Jefferson has been taking ballroom dance classes in his spare time, and he and his partner participated in their first competition last weekend.

The event was held in the big red barn at Thanksgiving Point. We had no idea what to expect or what we were doing, but somehow managed to get through it :)

Jefferson and his partner were a little nervous but pulled it together and looked great when it was time to perform.

They competed in the swing:

The cha-cha:And the foxtrot, as well.

They were called back to the final round in the swing, where they took 6th place:

We were excited they did so well in their first competition and hope they score even higher when it's time for the BYU championships next month!

The End of an Era

One week ago was State swimming.

The only downside for Krissia was a severe case of bronchitis, but she swam with the heart of a champion.

The beginning of the medley relay:

The medley relay takes gold!

The other Friday event for Krissia was the 50 meter Free. She had a bad start, but was able to pull out a bronze medal in the end :)

Saturday was the backstroke:

Again, Krissia took third. Unfortunately, swimming with bronchitis took its toll after this race; a few seconds after I snapped this picture, Krissia got out of the pool and passed out cold:

However, she was able to pull herself together for the last event of the day; the 400 meter relay. Her team was in 4th place when she dove in the water - Krissia caught up to 1st place during her leg of the relay:

I think it sunk in for Krissia after the relay that she had just finished her high school swimming career:

When all was said and done, the Desert Hills girls took third. The boys took second and were awarded a trophy:

The Trident swim team:

There were plenty of hugs and tears, especially among the seniors:

Krissia spent the first part of the week catching up on her sleep and getting over her illness. Afterwards, she seemed a little lost for a day or two as she tried to adjust to life without competitive swimming. When something has been such a big part of one's life for so long, it can be tough to move on...but Krissia seems to be rebounding well. It will be interesting to see what "post swim" life will bring for her :)

A Proper English Gent

During Krissia's last home swim meet, DEl and I were asked to help out. Jefferson was over at a friend's house, so Mathison ended up sitting next to his Grandma Beatty. The following conversation happened halfway through the meet:

Mathison: Grandma, I need to visit the lavatory.

Grandma (startled): What did you just say?

Mathison (exasperated): Grandma...I need to pee!

I have NO idea where he came up with that one!
